If you watch MTV a lot you probably have seen the new 10,000 Maniacs video Trouble Me.
All the senior citizens in the video are local women who were asked to take part.
Joyce Bracey was one of the lucky ones.
"It was at Chautauqua in the Athenaeum," she said. "We were up there for a weekend."
She explained how she was chosen for the clip.
"There's a girl that I know, her daughter works at Chautauqua and she said they (the Maniacs video production crew) were looking for eight older people that they wanted to be in the background. They also hired a character actress from New York. She is in the video and is riding on the back of the bike with Natalie."
She said she liked the experience of being on camera. "It was fun and we had a really good time. There were a director, a makeup man, a wardrobe girl. It's just things you only read about. They were just super people and they said they enjoyed working with us because of our enthusiasm. On the final day we took pictures of the producer, Natalie and the whole crew and they sent us all a copy of the video."
Mrs. Bracey had only one minor disappointment: all the footage is of the star.
"We were there and did so many different little things. We realized that they had to edit. Naturally that's they way it has to be. I don't know how many hours of taping it takes because they don't know what they are going to use."
She explained to Hot Trax what happened in the beginning. "First we had to go try out. We had to do silly, crazy things which were kind of funny. Some men tried out too, but they decided not to use them. Natalie is such a sweet girl."
Mrs. Bracey said she felt lucky to get in the video a couple of times because some of the women ended up on the cutting room floor. "The exciting part was that they wanted us to wear older looking clothes," she said. "I wore my grandmother's dress. Natalie thought it was beautiful because she likes that type of thing. I normally wear glasses but didn't for the video and some people didn't recognize me."
She said working with the lead singer was nice. "She acted, to me, as she appeared - a sweet, nice girl who enjoyed it."
According to Maniacs' management, Ms. Merchant chose to work with the Polish director Yurek Bogayevics after seeing his film Anna. The theme of the video mirrors the spirit of the song, which is the offering of honest friendship and open love. "Most people would assume that Touble Me is a song that is exclusively written for young people," Ms. Merchant said. "This is not so. The song is universal, all inclusive. That is why I chose to show a dear friendship between an older and a younger woman. We filmed the video in Chautauqua Institution and local women from the ages of 68 to 88 participated. The criterion for those who auditioned was that they simply agreed that to age is not to die, but to live even more fully."
